Your career mentor is someone who can help you achieve your professional goals, providing training along with objective advice and support. If you’re ambitious about your career, then a mentor can help you succeed, so why don’t you have one?
This is where BroadWise can help. We will provide you with a career mentor via the platform; all you need is a vision of where you think you want to be in your career. You need the drive to get there, and the confidence to seek guidance and counsel from whomever you deem inspirational and credible enough to help you.
With that in mind, how do you find a mentor on the BroadWise platform? It’s very simple. Just follow the steps below:
Step 1: Identify the areas you need improvement
It is important that you start the process of finding a mentor by assessing your overall vision for your career. Chose an area you want to specialize in, be it digital project manager, digital business analyst, scrum master, data analyst and so on. Evaluate the areas where you feel you need improvement and then identify the mentor that will help you.
Remember, your chosen mentor will be someone on the BroadWise platform that you can build trust in. They will be that credible mentor that will help you to build confidence and assist you in mastering your area of specialisation.
Step 2: Chose a mentor
Once you have identified what it is you need help with, it’s time to find the right person to assist. This will be someone who has already travelled the path you are aspiring to walk, and someone who has overcome the obstacles that you are now facing. Choose someone who you know possesses the skills you want to develop or perhaps holds the position you would like to have in the future. At the same time don’t narrow your search too much. The mentor has to be somebody on the platform who is more senior than you in terms of knowledge and experience. You should consider sponsors, SME’s, senior colleagues, and former/current project colleagues who are now working and gaining hands-on experience.
Step 3: Reach out to your chosen mentor
The way you approach your potential career mentor on the platform will depend on the nature of your relationship. You will find the contact details of your chosen mentor on the BroadWise list of mentors. You should begin by sending them a message, explaining how they inspire you, what specifically you think they could help you with, and politely asking if they could spare some time for a chat. Let them know the best time and means to contact you, and that you hope they would like to talk further.
We would also recommend that you run this by your colleagues on the platform beforehand. They may be more familiar with your potential mentor, or have experience of mentoring themselves, and able to give you some pointers on your approach. The most important thing is, your mentor needs to be outside of your group of ‘comfort zone colleagues’ wherever possible.
Whoever your mentor may be, the key is to be humble and human. Simply approach the person in a professional and humble manner – that would be hugely appreciated; remember that he or she is doing you a favour by taking time out of their busy schedule to commit time. Establishing and maintaining mentor-mentee relationship works both ways in agreeing the time that suit both parties. Most importantly, remember that in this profession, age is not relevant and will not influence your professional career development.
Step 4: Take care of the relationship
Remember, your career mentor is going out of their way to help you, therefore gratitude and respect is key to both establishing and maintaining this relationship. In the group session, be respectful to your colleagues and collaborate with them when need be. Before your first meeting, and every meeting from thereon, be punctual and well prepared. Every time you meet with your mentor, find a way to show your gratitude for their time and commitment to your career growth.
You don’t have to tick a certain box before being eligible for a career mentor. Simply follow the procedures on the platform, which BroadWise have created to be transparent and responsible. From the BroadWise perspective, finding a career mentor will be one of the best decisions you will ever make, and it is something every driven professional should pursue on their path to career success.
Interview preparation
If you would prefer to speak with someone for interview preparation advice, then please contact a mentor on the platform, a trainer directly, alumni on the platform, or colleagues that will prep you and help you polish and improve what you have already learned on the platform. With a wealth of experience on the platform behind you, you will have various channels to follow in order to obtain your interview prep advice. We also have plenty of resources and tools to get you ready for your interview. Some of the resources and tools can be found in the knowledge base on Basecamp, the knowledge base on Confluence, and within past projects on Basecamp and much more.
Job security
The moment you secure a job, you are encouraged to notify us immediately and directly using the available e-form accessible via your candidate’s dashboard.
Need help with an employer’s reference? We are here to assist as long as our records shows you have worked on Digital Notation projects from end to end. If our record shows that you haven’t worked on any projects but are asking for a reference from us, we will not be able to help (see terms and conditions).
Get in touch with us with the details of your new employer so that we can provide your reference. An employer’s reference is free of charge and is not available for purchase. It is strictly based upon your practical work experience gained by working on Digital Notation projects.
Before completing the e-form, you need to ensure that you have your success story ready. This is because part of the form requires you to enter your success story in order to inspire future colleagues who will join the platform or are yet to secure a job.
